Announcing the Development of Urea (AdBlue) and Bio-diesel Sensors
The original focus for the Sentelligence smart sensor platforms was for monitoring functional fluids in service. The concept was based on the requirement to monitor changes in fluid properties and chemistry as a function of usage. Since the implementation of the original concept a number of additional opportunities for fluid monitoring have occurred that are based on composition or material quality. Two very topical areas are the ability for on-board monitoring of the urea content, for the SCR NOx reduction systems, and of the bio-diesel content of diesel fuels. Both of these applications are becoming a requirement in Europe where SCR systems are already deployed on diesel engine vehicles. Bio-diesel, both as blends (B5, B10, etc.) and as 100% bio-diesel (B100) are also already in use, and from January 2007 B5 will become a standard formulation within Europe. The US EPA has already announced the move towards SCR systems for 2010, and bio-diesel blends are becoming available in certain areas of the country. Sentelligence is currently testing a version of its smart sensors for the urea application, and is in the process of starting the applications development work for an equivalent bio-diesel sensor. The latter will be used to differentiate petroleum-based fuels from the bio-fuels, and will provide for monitoring the bio-diesel content. In the case of the urea sensor, the sensor provides a positive identification for the urea solution, and generates an estimate of the urea concentration level. The measurement of the urea solution is absolute, and the sensor is able to differentiate the prescribed urea solution (AdBlue) from water and other fluids, including brine, coolant, windshield washer fluid and fuel
About Sentelligence, Inc
Sentelligence is an industrial design and development company specializing in onboard intelligent sensing systems for industrial and commercial applications. The company’s sensor designs can detect urea concentration, bio-fuels, soot levels in engine oil, water in hydraulic fluid, aging of transmission fluid, and the condition of coolants and fuel. These low-cost systems can replace periodic scheduled maintenance and emergency breakdown practices with condition-based predictive maintenance. Intelligent sensor products address an emerging market with broad military, commercial trucking, and automotive applications. Sentelligence is based in Indianapolis, Indiana.
